Burkina Faso has announced plans to construct a small nuclear power plant in collaboration with Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation, Rosatom, by the year 2030.By LeadNaija News
According to Burkina Faso’s Ambassador to Moscow, Aristide Rapugdondba Ludovic Tapsoba, the initiative marks a significant step in the country’s drive toward energy independence and technological advancement.
“We have excellent relations with Rosatom. Our students are already being trained in nuclear technology. In five years, I think we will be able to build a nuclear power plant. For now, we are looking at a small nuclear power plant, but in the future, of course, we will build a large one,” Ambassador Tapsoba stated.
He recalled that during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum held in June 2025, both countries signed a cooperation agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Tapsoba further revealed that Burkina Faso and Russia are preparing to sign additional agreements covering broader areas of economic cooperation in the coming months.
The project is expected to position Burkina Faso as one of the few African nations venturing into the nuclear energy sector for sustainable power generation and industrial growth.
