Tension erupted on Saturday during the by-election in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State, as an agent of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was reportedly beaten and manhandled by voters at Ozolua Model Primary School, Iguobazuwa East Ward.
According to eyewitnesses, the unnamed party agent allegedly refused to release some Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to eligible voters, a development that sparked outrage at the polling unit.
The situation quickly escalated, leading to the agent being assaulted by irate voters before security operatives stepped in.
“The voters became angry because they felt the PDP agent was deliberately withholding their PVCs. It took the intervention of the police to save him from being lynched,” a source at the scene told reporters.
Despite the incident, voters turned out in large numbers across various wards in Iguobazuwa to exercise their franchise. Security personnel were also observed maintaining order in the area to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
