The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has emphasised the need for improved accommodation and welfare for soldiers, highlighting that the well-being of personnel is critical for operational efficiency and morale.
Addressing troops shortly after the closing ceremony of the 2025 RSM convention in Enugu on Thursday, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu noted that proper living conditions, adequate facilities, and attention to welfare are key priorities for the Nigerian Army.
“Your accommodation and welfare are top priorities. As leaders, we will ensure that every officer and soldier has the support they require to perform their duties effectively,” he said.
The COAS linked troop welfare directly to operational performance, explaining that soldiers who are well-rested and properly accommodated are better prepared to execute missions with diligence and discipline.
He reiterated the Army’s “soldier-first” philosophy, assuring personnel that their needs would be consistently addressed.
Beyond accommodation, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu stressed the importance of obedience to lawful orders and adherence to Army core values. He congratulated the troops for their professionalism and discipline, which he said were critical to maintaining operational readiness.
Highlighting the role of senior non-commissioned officers (NCOs) and young officers, the COAS urged them to take unit-level training seriously, particularly weapons handling and tactical drills.
“Senior NCOs are crucial in ensuring that soldiers can operate effectively in any scenario. Your supervision, mentorship, and guidance directly impact our operational success,” he said.
The RSM Convention, themed “Operational Readiness and Combat Efficiency,” also addressed leadership development, discipline, and professional ethics. Lt.-Gen. Shaibu encouraged troops to apply lessons from the convention in their units to sustain combat readiness, improve morale, and enhance overall effectiveness.
The COAS concluded by seeking the commitment of all personnel to uphold Army values, remain resolute in their duties, and maintain high standards of discipline and professionalism, while ensuring their welfare and accommodation remain priorities for command.
