The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to make a pronouncement on the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations within the next 48 hours, as doubts persist over Morocco’s willingness to host the tournament scheduled for March 17 to April 3 .

CAF Communications Director Luxolo September confirmed the matter is receiving “urgent and high-level attention” after weeks of discussions.

Reports suggest Morocco may be reconsidering hosting duties following the fallout from the 2025 AFCON final, with scheduling conflicts involving domestic league completion and men’s international friendlies cited as potential factors.

South Africa has expressed readiness to step in as alternative host, with Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie insisting his country “will not allow women’s football to be treated this way” . The tournament also serves as qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with four semi-finalists earning automatic spots.

CAF’s imminent decision will determine whether the tournament proceeds as planned, is postponed, or relocated.

The uncertainty has disrupted preparations for defending champions Nigeria and other qualified nations.

Morocco’s reported hesitation may be linked to post-AFCON final tensions and scheduling pressures.
