The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ekiti State and the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) have adopted Governor Biodun Oyebanji as their preferred candidate ahead of the June 20 governorship election.

The unions said their endorsement was based on the governor’s commitment to workers’ welfare and improved conditions of service during his nearly four years in office.

They pledged to mobilise their families, colleagues, friends, neighbours and communities to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate at the polls.

Ekiti NLC Chairman, Kolapo Olatunde, said all 35 affiliate unions unanimously adopted Oyebanji because of his achievements in workers’ welfare, including regular payment of salaries, pensions and gratuities, payment of arrears, approval of leave bonuses, employment opportunities, donation of buses to unions and free transportation for workers.

ASUSS Chairman and National President of the union, Olusola Adigun, also praised Oyebanji for fulfilling promises made to teachers, describing him as the most teacher-friendly governor in Ekiti’s history.

Adigun revealed that the union had set up the “BAO Grassroots Coordinators” to mobilise support for the governor across the state, adding that Oyebanji deserves over 500,000 votes in the election.

Responding, Governor Oyebanji appreciated the support from workers and teachers, noting that his administration’s cordial relationship with labour unions and prioritisation of workers’ welfare had prevented industrial actions in the state.
