The Ekiti State Executive Council has approved an additional ₦1.06 billion for extra works on the ongoing reconstruction and remodeling of the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, in a move aimed at upgrading the facility to meet national sporting standards.
The approval was granted at the council’s second meeting for 2026 held on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti.
With the new approval, the total cost of the stadium project has increased to ₦2.68 billion, up from the initial contract sum of ₦1.62 billion awarded in March 2025.
Council explained that the additional works became necessary following an inspection by the project evaluation team, which identified several components required for the holistic redevelopment of the stadium complex.
The original reconstruction contract was awarded to United Logistic Construction Solution Limited and covered major facilities including the administrative building, soccer pitch and accessories, athletics track, spectators’ stand canopy, perimeter fencing, and renovation of the VIP stand.
According to the council, the project has already achieved about 74 per cent completion.
However, to enhance the stadium’s functionality and align it with modern sports infrastructure standards, the state government approved additional features to be incorporated into the project.
The newly approved works include the construction of a new administrative building, installation of 1,500 additional spectator seats, a 250-capacity hostel, extension of the spectators’ stand canopy, construction of a multipurpose court for volleyball and basketball, additional stadium lighting, five VIP toilets, and extension of the soccer pitch.
The council noted that the expanded scope would significantly improve the capacity and usability of the facility while providing better amenities for athletes, officials, and spectators.
When completed, the upgraded Oluyemi Kayode Stadium is expected to meet the standards required for matches in the Nigeria Premier Football League and other national sporting competitions.
The government said the redevelopment of the stadium forms part of its broader commitment to revitalising sports infrastructure, promoting youth development, and positioning Ekiti State as a viable host for major sporting events.
Council also expressed optimism that the upgraded complex would enhance the spectator experience and provide world-class training and competition facilities for athletes across the state.
The additional works are expected to be completed within 12 months, in line with the revised timeline for the project.
Aside from the additional ₦1.06 billion approved for extra works on the reconstruction of the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, the Ekiti State Executive Council also approved several key infrastructure and policy initiatives aimed at strengthening development across the state.
Among them is the approval of ₦6.29 billion for the rehabilitation of major township roads in Ado-Ekiti and an approval of ₦690 million for the renovation of schools and security enhancements across the state.
