The Federal Government has declared that electricity meters are not for sale, directing electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) and licensed meter installers to provide and install smart meters for consumers at no cost nationwide.
The government issued a stern warning that any DISCO or installer found charging Nigerians for meter provision or installation will face prosecution, describing such actions as illegal and unacceptable.+Full Details. .
Speaking recently, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed that the meters were procured under the World Bank–funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), a key intervention aimed at improving billing efficiency and revenue collection across Nigeria’s power sector.
According to the minister, the Federal Government plans to import a total of 3.4 million electricity meters through the DISREP initiative, noting that about one million meters have already been delivered into the country.
Adelabu stressed that since the meters are being funded through the programme, consumers should not be made to pay for either their supply or installation, adding that any attempt to do so amounts to a violation of government policy.
He explained that full metering of electricity consumers will enhance transparency in billing, encourage customers’ willingness to pay, and improve liquidity within the power sector.
The minister further noted that improved liquidity would ultimately translate into better electricity service delivery for Nigerians, as DISCOs would be better positioned to invest in infrastructure and operations.
The Federal Government’s directive is expected to bring relief to millions of unmetered electricity users and curb estimated billing practices that have long generated public complaints across the country.+See More Details. .
