The Abasi People Foundation, representing the Abasi ethnic group in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, has fiercely rejected the proposed establishment of a Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council, describing it as an attempt to subjugate minority ethnic groups under the influence of dominant southern cultures.
In a strongly worded statement, the Foundation argued that such a body would undermine the autonomy and recognition of smaller ethnic nationalities in the South-South and South-East regions.
They insisted that distinct traditional institutions representing the diverse ethnic groups in the South must be recognized and preserved, rather than creating a monolithic council controlled by larger ethnic groups.
The rejection highlights growing tensions between minority ethnic groups and larger ethnic nationalities in Nigeria’s southern regions over representation, cultural autonomy, and the preservation of distinct identities.
The proposed council has sparked fierce debate about who truly speaks for the diverse peoples of southern Nigeria.
