A farmer, Temitope Odunleye, has been remanded at the Olokuta Correctional Facility in Akure over the alleged murder of his colleague, Confidence David, following a dispute over farm boundaries.
The suspect was arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court in Akure on a murder charge after reportedly attacking the victim with a cutlass at Mariwo Farm Area in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State.
According to an anonymous source, operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun, responded promptly to a distress call from Chief Toye Ojo, a local leader, regarding the suspected killing.
“At about 12:30 pm, a distress call was received by Chief Toye Ojo, the Asamo of Iron Town, from Iron community regarding a suspected murder. Officers and men of Amotekun responded immediately, moving to the farmland with eyewitnesses.
After a preliminary investigation at the Ifedore office, the suspect was moved to the headquarters in Akure along with eyewitnesses, while investigations into accomplices continue,” the source said.
The source added that tension escalated the following morning as friends and relatives of the victim attempted to avenge his death, but joint efforts by security agencies helped to calm the community. Odunleye voluntarily confessed to the crime.
During the court proceedings, State prosecutor Dr. O.F. Akeredolu informed the court that the alleged offence occurred on August 11, 2025, at around 10:00 am.
He stated that Odunleye attacked the victim during a boundary dispute and allegedly macheted him to death.
The formal charge read: “That you, Temitope Odunleye, on or about August 11, 2025, at about 10:00 am, at Mariwo Farm Area, Ifedore, Local Government Area of Ondo State, did unlawfully kill one Mr. Confidence David and thereby committed a felonious offence contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.”
Given the gravity of the allegation, the court did not allow the defendant to enter a plea.
Through an application dated August 13, 2025, the prosecutor requested that the court remand Odunleye in a correctional facility pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
Chief Magistrate Damilola Sekoni adjourned the case to September 15 for a ruling on the application, with the defendant ordered to remain in custody at Olokuta Correctional Facility until the adjourned date.
