Many people may be infected and continue with their daily lives, unaware of what’s happening inside their bodies.

This silent nature makes it very dangerous because it weakens the immune system gradually until the body can no longer fight infections. Here are six signs that may suggest HIV infection, especially if they persist and remain unexplained.

1. Persistent flu-like symptoms.

In the early stage of HIV, some people experience fever, sore throat, night sweats, swollen lymph nodes, or body rashes.

These signs may appear 2–6 weeks after infection but often get dismissed as a simple flu or malaria.

2. Unexplained weight loss.

When HIV progresses, it interferes with the way the body absorbs nutrients.

A person may lose weight quickly even when eating normally.

This “wasting syndrome” is one of the key warning signals.

3. Constant fatigue.

Feeling extremely tired without a clear reason is another red flag.

Since HIV weakens the immune system, the body is always working overtime to fight infections, which drains energy levels.

4. Frequent infections.

A healthy immune system protects you from illnesses, but HIV weakens these defenses.

If you notice frequent colds, tuberculosis, skin infections, or yeast infections that keep coming back, it may be a sign your immune system is compromised.

5. Night sweats.

Sweating excessively at night, even when the weather is cool, is a common symptom of HIV infection.

These sweats are usually drenching and uncomfortable.

6. Mouth sores or white patches.

Oral thrush, sores, or persistent white patches in the mouth and throat are common in people whose immunity is weakened by HIV.
