Federal Government Issues Flood Warning: 19 States to Be Affected Between August 5–9 (Names/ Full List)

The Federal Government, through the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment, has issued an urgent warning regarding impending floods expected to hit 19 states between August 5 and August 9, 2025.

According to the statement released on Tuesday, the projected floods are a result of expected heavy rainfall across several parts of the country. Citizens, local authorities, and emergency agencies are advised to take immediate precautionary measures to mitigate potential loss of lives and property.

  1. Akwa Ibom: Edor, Eket, Ikom, Oron, Upenekang
  2. Bauchi: Tafawa-Balewa, Azare, Jama’are, Kari, Misau, Jama’a
  3. Ebonyi: Abakaliki, Echara, Ezilo
  4. Cross River: Ogoja Edor, Obubra
  5. Nasarawa: Keana, Keffi, Wamba
  6. Benue: Agaku, Buruku, Gboko, Igumale, Ito, Katsina-Ala, Ugba, Vande-Ikya
  7. Kaduna: Jaji, Kafancha, Birnin-Gwari, Zaria
  8. Katsina: Bindawa, Bakori, Daura, Funtua
  9. Kebbi: Bagudo, Birnin-Kebbi, Bunza, Gwandu, Jega, Kalgo, Kamba, Kangiwa, Shanga, Ribah, Sakaba, Saminaka, Yelwa, Gauri-Banza
  10. Kano: Bebeji, Gezawa, Gwarzo, Kano, Karaye, Tundun-wada, Wudil, Kunchi
  11. Niger: Kontagora, Rijau, Ringim

Federal Advisory

The Centre has emphasized the importance of community awareness, urging residents living in flood-prone areas to stay informed and relocate temporarily if possible. State and local governments have been directed to activate emergency response plans, ensure proper drainage clearance, and maintain communication with the public.

“Timely and coordinated action is essential to avoid devastating consequences,” the advisory reads.

  2. Clear drains and water channels
  3. Relocate vulnerable populations where necessary
  4. Report unusual water levels to local authorities
  5. Follow only official government advisories
