The Federal Government has approved a total of ₦493 billion for two major infrastructure projects — the construction of a new Carter Bridge in Lagos and the upgrade of the 152-kilometre Kano–Katsina Road.
Briefing State House Correspondents after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, Minister of Works David Umahi said the Kano–Katsina Road, earlier split into two sections, will now cost ₦134 billion following budget revisions. Section One (74.1km) is now pegged at ₦68 billion, while Section Two (79.5km) will cost ₦66.115 billion.
On the Carter Bridge, Umahi revealed that underwater inspections conducted in 2013 and 2019 showed severe structural damage caused by illegal sand mining, erosion, and corrosion.
Julius Berger has recommended a complete rebuild, estimated at ₦359 billion. Talks are ongoing with Deutsche Bank for funding.
FEC also approved the engagement of seven specialized contractors under an EPC+F model for investigative works, design, and bidding for the Carter and 3rd Mainland Bridges, alongside several emergency bridge repairs nationwide.
