The Federal Government has commenced the nationwide distribution of health commodities valued at ₦2.9 billion, as part of renewed efforts to reduce preventable maternal and neonatal deaths across Nigeria.
The commodities, which include delivery kits, antenatal medicines and supplements, insecticide-treated mosquito nets, family planning materials, and other essential drugs for mothers and newborns, are being dispatched to health facilities nationwide.
Beyond the supply of commodities, the initiative also prioritises upgrading of primary health centres and capacity-building of health workers to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system.
The programme is being implemented in collaboration with development partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, UNFPA, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. According to officials, the WHO will provide annual data tracking to monitor outcomes and ensure progress is sustained.
The Federal Government has also urged state governments to complement its efforts by providing additional support at sub-national levels, in order to guarantee long-term impact.
Officials described the programme as a significant intervention aimed at safeguarding the lives of women and children while improving healthcare access across the country.
