The Federal Government has unveiled the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative, a programme designed to accelerate the deployment of solar energy solutions across Nigeria’s public institutions — including schools, hospitals, security posts, and government offices.
The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Budget Office of the Federation, the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp), and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI).
According to the REA, the programme stems from a strategic national priority to power critical infrastructure with clean, reliable energy, reduce dependence on diesel, and lower the carbon footprint of the public sector.
Beyond providing sustainable power, the initiative aims to promote locally developed renewable energy infrastructure and replace unsustainable energy financing models.
Phase Zero of the project is fully funded by the Federal Government, with a ₦100 billion investment. Subsequent phases will adopt innovative, blended financing models, attracting private capital from both local and international long-term funders.
