Police in Limpopo have recovered the bodies of four people after their vehicle was swept away while attempting to cross an overflowing bridge at the Makotopong River between Madiga and Makotopong villages, outside Polokwane.
According to police, five people were travelling in a blue Renault Kwid along the gravel road connecting the two villages when the vehicle overturned at the flooded low-lying bridge and was carried into the river on Sunday morning. One occupant managed to escape and alerted authorities.
Search and rescue teams, including the SAPS Water Wing Unit and emergency services, launched a two-day operation that led to the recovery of the submerged vehicle and the bodies of two men and two women.
Police have opened an inquest docket and investigations are continuing. Authorities have also warned motorists to avoid crossing flooded bridges following heavy rains that have caused flooding across parts of the province.
