Fresh Wave of Defections Looms in Senate, PDP Numbers Shrink

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may suffer further depletion in its ranks in the Senate as more lawmakers are expected to formally announce their defection during plenary.

Sources within the National Assembly disclosed that the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, is set to read additional defection letters from affected senators, including Senator Iya Abbas of Adamawa State, who is reportedly moving from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Also expected is the defection of the Deputy Minority Leader from the PDP to the Accord Party, further deepening the opposition party’s challenges in the upper legislative chamber.

Insiders further revealed that among the 17 senators currently remaining on the PDP platform, no fewer than six are considering switching allegiance either to the APC or the African Democratic Congress (ADC) within the week.

A source close to the Senate leadership said several defection letters had already been submitted to Akpabio but were temporarily stepped down out of respect for the late Senator Barinada Mpigi, whose death led to the suspension of plenary earlier in the week.

Currently, the total number of serving senators stands at 106, short of the constitutionally prescribed 109 seats. The vacancies arose following the deaths of Senator Godiya Akwashiki (Nasarawa North), Senator Okechukwu Ezea (Enugu North), and Senator Mpigi representing Rivers South East.
