Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has made a bold claim that he’s never been driven by wealth — despite being in the political spotlight for nearly four decades.
In an interview with The Sun, the 60-year-old politician described his lifestyle as “unassuming”, even revealing that his wife doesn’t own a personal car but instead uses his backup vehicle.
Key Quotes from Amaechi: “I don’t like money. I’ve been in Nigerian politics since I was 22. I’m 60 now. That’s 38 years in politics — have you ever heard of any scandal involving me stealing money?”
“My wife doesn’t even have a car. She drives my backup car.”
More from the Interview: Amaechi says he’s kept a clean record and has avoided luxury or flamboyant living, unlike many politicians of his rank.
He admitted he may have missed a major opportunity to transform housing in Rivers State while he was governor.
It wasn’t until he served as Minister of Transport that he realized the possibility of mass housing solutions, referencing how countries like China accommodate massive populations in high-rise structures.
“If I had known what I now know as Minister, I might have borrowed to build six million homes for Rivers people,” Amaechi added.
Leadnaija Take: Rotimi Amaechi’s comments are bound to stir public debate. Is this genuine humility or a political rebrand? His claim of not liking money comes at a time when Nigerians are growing increasingly skeptical of the lifestyles of public servants. CONTINUE READING
