Ibronke-Omolokun: Why I Left The US For Nigeria To Start A Food Business

According to Vanguard News, Temitope Ibronke-Omolokun, a Nigerian-American entrepreneur, relocated from the United States to Nigeria to establish her hospitality business, The Motherland Kitchen Nigeria Ltd. Specializing in online food delivery, her company collaborates with platforms like Chowdeck and Orda Africa, offering both local and intercontinental cuisines delivered to customers’ doorsteps in 30-35 minutes.

In an interview, Ibronke-Omolokun revealed that her venture was inspired by a childhood dream and her experiences assisting her aunt, a caterer, in Nigeria.

After 25 years abroad, she returned home with a vision to replicate popular US food delivery models like DoorDash and Uber Eats. Despite challenges such as inconsistent power supply and difficulties in hiring qualified staff, she has introduced innovative practices like combo meals, which offer a free drink with every order.

Discussing her motivation, she emphasized her deep-rooted love for Nigeria. While living in Kentucky and Dallas, she served as a community anchor for Nigerians in the diaspora. Her connection to the homeland ultimately drove her decision to invest in Nigeria’s business landscape, despite its challenges compared to the US.

She highlighted the stark differences between the two countries, citing reliable power supply, easier access to funding, and government support for small businesses as major advantages in the US. In contrast, Nigeria’s economic policies, she argued, lack adequate support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

To encourage diasporan investments, Ibronke-Omolokun called on the Nigerian government to provide stable power, facilitate small business loans, and implement SME-friendly policies.

She believes boosting small businesses can help reduce unemployment and drive economic growth, given their role as the backbone of any economy.Tap Here for the Full Details.
