Detained activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was allegedly assaulted and had his arm broken by a police team from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit during a forceful transfer operation early Thursday morning.
According to a statement shared via Sowore’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the incident occurred at 6:00 AM at the Force Intelligence Department (FID), Abuja, where he is currently being held.
The post alleges that a team of nine officers, led by a Chief Superintendent of Police, stormed Sowore’s holding cell under the pretext of taking him to court. When Sowore demanded to see the charges against him and requested to contact his legal team, he was reportedly manhandled and his arm broken in the process.
Rather than being taken to court, he was transferred to another undisclosed police facility, raising concerns about due process and his safety.
As of press time, police authorities have not released an official statement regarding the incident or the status of Sowore’s health.
Human rights groups and legal advocates are already condemning the reported actions, calling for transparency, medical attention for Sowore, and immediate legal access.
