Imo Governor, Hope Uzodimma Message To Nigerian Youths On Democracy Day (Full Text)

He said: “Young Nigerians must see themselves as part of this system. They must see themselves as participants, not mere spectators.

Imo governor Hope Uzodimma has called on Nigerian youths to take active roles in shaping the country’s democracy, rather than watching from the sidelines.

Speaking at the June 12 Democracy Day lecture in Abuja on Thursday, Uzodimma, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, said democracy is built on the active participation of citizens who vote, speak out, and hold leaders accountable.

He said: “Young Nigerians must see themselves as part of this system. They must see themselves as participants, not mere spectators.

“You inherited the right earned in 1993. You must also inherit the responsibility that comes with it.”

Uzodimma said no constitution or political system can uphold itself without the will and integrity of the people.

“Change comes from active participation, not docility. There is also the matter of political will. That is what sustains democracy,” he said.

Reflecting on the significance of June 12, Uzodimma said the date represents a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic history and should not be reduced to symbolic celebrations.

“June 12 represents a point in our national journey when the people made a clear choice and the system responded in disagreement,” he said.

He praised the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government for recognising the legacy of the late Chief Moshood Abiola.

“In recognising June 12, the APC-led government did more than declare a public holiday.

“It corrected the record. It restored the name of Chief MKO Abiola to its rightful place in our political and democratic history,” he added.
