Ibitayo Ajibola, a student of the Faculty of Dentistry in Obafemi Awolowo University committed suicide on Wednesday, August 13. The student was reported to have committed suicide in the early hours of the day after the release of unfavourable examination results.

In a statement released by the University’s Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA), the incident occurred shortly after the college released examination results. Sources within the college alleged that the deceased had repeated Part 2 last year and, after failing again this year, was faced with the prospect of automatic withdrawal from the college, as stipulated in its policy.

The Association, in its statement, described the death of the promising young student as more than just a loss, calling it a painful reminder of the silent struggles many students endure.

The Great Ife Students’ Union, in a release on Wednesday, expressed its profound sorrow over the sudden loss of a fellow student from the Department of Dentistry.

The release stated that while the Union is still collaborating with relevant authorities regarding the missing Dorcas Oseghale, they received “devastating news” about another student’s death.

In the release, the Students’ Union extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and peers of the deceased. They expressed hopes that those affected would “find the fortitude to bear this unimaginable loss.”

Moreover, the Students’ Union noted that this incident highlights critical issues surrounding mental health within academic life.

The Union remarked that “the pressures of studies, expectations, setbacks, and disappointments can sometimes feel overwhelming.” They enjoined students to remember they are not alone in facing these challenges. They encouraged seeking help as a sign of strength and reminded students of the available confidential counselling services at the university health centre.

Committing to advocate for better mental health resources and destigmatising these discussions was also a priority for the Union as they called upon university management and staff to unite as a community to prevent future tragedies.
