The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to political parties across the country over what it described as the “premature commencement of public campaigns” ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
In a statement released on Monday, the Commission said it is alarmed by the growing trend of political campaigns being conducted in clear violation of the Electoral Act, 2022, which outlines the legal timeline for political party activities and public campaigns.
“The current resort to public campaigning by some political parties and aspirants is not only inappropriate at this time but also a gross violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act,” the statement read.
INEC reminded all political stakeholders that the legal window for campaign activities has not yet been opened and urged parties to adhere strictly to the timelines and regulations outlined in the law.
The Commission further cautioned that it will not hesitate to take appropriate action against any party or individual found flouting electoral guidelines, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring a level playing field and orderly electoral process as the nation prepares for the 2027 polls.
This warning comes amid growing political tensions and a flurry of unofficial campaign activities seen on social media, rallies, and political gatherings across the country.
