The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has issued a stern warning to officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), insisting that Nigerians must no longer be asked to pay extra money for passport-related processes.
Tunji-Ojo gave the directive during an unscheduled visit to the Nigeria Immigration Service office in Gwagwalada, Abuja, where he interacted directly with officers and assessed operations at the facility.+See more details
“I don’t want to hear that you are collecting money for card or paper,” the minister said firmly. “Nigerians have already paid for their passports online. Serve them well.”
The minister stressed that all payments required for passport processing are captured on the official online platform and that demanding additional fees from applicants is unacceptable. He described such practices as exploitative and a betrayal of public trust.
In November, the Interior Minister also carried out surprise visits to the NSCDC FCT Command and the Federal Fire Service station in Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, to assess facilities and officers’ readiness to respond to emergencies.
He said the inspections were in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive that all security agencies remain fully prepared to protect lives and critical national assets.
