Fighters affiliated with Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) launched a deadly assault on a Defence and Security Forces (SDF) post in Ekadey, Agadez Region, Niger Republic, near the Algerian border, killing security personnel and seizing military equipment.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that he early morning attack on February 28, 2025, was carried out by JNIM militants in eight heavily armed vehicles. The insurgents overpowered the troops, took control of the base after intense fighting, and looted military assets before retreating to an unknown location.
“The assailants stormed the base in coordinated waves, engaging in heavy gunfire with security forces. Unfortunately, the SDF suffered casualties, and the attackers managed to flee with vehicles and weapons,” a military source disclosed on condition of anonymity.
JNIM, an al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist organization, has intensified attacks in the Sahel region, particularly in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, targeting military positions and civilian communities.
