On Saturday, January 4, Daily Post Nigeria reported that Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has rejected calls for him to apologize to former Rivers State governor Dr. Peter Odili. Wike questioned the reasoning behind such calls and voiced his skepticism regarding their rationale. His remarks come at a time when the Rivers peace accord is still a hotly debated topic.
The fractures within the state’s political landscape have been further exacerbated by the controversies, especially those involving Siminalayi Fubara, the current governor of Rivers State. At a New Year’s luncheon held at his Obio-Akpor estate, Wike insisted he was innocent.
He turned to the elders who were pressuring him to back down, and he said, “Why should I apologize?” To what end?” “You turned Rivers into your personal estate,” he said, accusing Odili of misusing state resources.
“I didn’t say anything wrong,” Wike said, claiming that an apology lacks a legal grounding. Further, he said that it would have been better for Odili to work with President Bola Tinubu rather than ignore his peace initiatives. He went on to say that he had not meant any offense by pointing out contradictions in Odili’s claims against him; rather, his remarks had been based on those claims.N..>>Don’t Miss Out!
