The Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), a terrorist group, has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks targeting the Nigerian Defence and Security Forces (SDF) in the Tillabéri region of Niger. The group made the claim in a statement issued on Jan. 19, 2025.
According to the statement, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were used to destroy two military vehicles along the Torodi-Makalondi axis, causing significant casualties among military personnel. The attack is part of an escalating campaign by JNIM to destabilize the sensitive tri-border area between Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.
The SDF’s official bulletin, broadcast on RTN on the same day, confirmed the attacks and provided further details. The report indicated that the assaults also targeted the Say-Tamou axis, the Torodi-Makalondi axis, and areas near Niaktiré. Six soldiers were reportedly injured in the explosions, with four sustaining serious injuries.
The attacks, which utilized strategically placed explosives, highlight the growing threat posed by JNIM in the region. Security analysts note that the Tillabéri region remains a hotspot for violent extremism due to its proximity to the borders of multiple conflict-affected nations.Tap Here To Read Full Details
