Tragedy struck on Wednesday, October 21, 2025, as an articulated truck belonging to the Dangote Group reportedly suffered a brake failure while descending from Ikare road, ramming into the permanent barricade at the main gate of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State.
According to a statement released by the Students’ Union Public Relations Officer, Comrade Ajidagba Mosadoluwa Akinbobola (Mosa Gold), the fatal accident claimed the lives of no fewer than 10 persons, including students and passersby.
The union expressed deep sorrow over the recurring tragedies involving heavy-duty trucks within the Akungba community and recalled that several appeals had been made to relevant authorities to restrict articulated vehicles from plying the Akungba route due to safety concerns.
“We regret to inform the entire students’ populace that a Dangote vehicle suffered brake failure from Ikare enroute Akungba and destroyed the barricade at the university main gate. Close to ten persons have lost their lives due to this tragic incident,” the statement read.
The Students’ Union reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of the university community, urging students to stay calm and avoid the highway while normalcy is being restored.
Comrade Akinbobola assured that the Union remains resolute in pursuing lasting solutions to prevent further loss of lives on the Akungba axis.
