The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party and political figure associated with emerging opposition platforms, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the reported arrest of a religious leader shortly after hosting him in Kaduna State.
In a statement titled “Troubling Developments in Our Polity that Must Be Nipped in the Bud,” Obi alleged that Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar was arrested by authorities following a meeting with him on Sunday, describing the development as a worrying sign for Nigeria’s democracy and civil liberties.
Obi said the incident highlights what he described as growing threats to freedom of speech and movement, warning against harassment or persecution of citizens and perceived political opponents.
He stressed that democratic governance must uphold free expression and the rule of law, urging authorities to respect constitutional rights and avoid actions capable of undermining the nation’s democratic foundations.
