A peruvian court on wednesday sentenced former president martin vizcarra to 14 years in prison for accepting bribes during his tenure as regional governor.
Vizcarra, who served as president from 2018 to 2020 and was known for his anti-corruption efforts, was found guilty of taking payments from construction companies while governing the moquegua region between 2011 and 2014.
Authorities said he received about $640,000 in return for favoring these companies in public contract awards. vizcarra, 62, showed no emotion as the sentence was announced in a lima courtroom, while prosecutors had requested a 15-year term.
He joins a long list of former peruvian leaders jailed on corruption charges, including pedro castillo, ollanta humala, and alejandro toledo, who are held at a special detention facility for ex-presidents in lima.
Vizcarra has consistently denied wrongdoing. Earlier this year, he was detained for 22 days as a potential flight risk but released on bail while his trial, which began in october 2024, continued.
