The Senate on Thursday confirmed the nomination of former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, as a non-career ambassador.
Yakubu’s confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which screened nominees forwarded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ambassadorial appointments.
Lawmakers noted that the former INEC chairman met all statutory requirements and was found suitable for diplomatic service.
Prof. Yakubu served two terms as INEC Chairman, during which he oversaw several general, off-cycle and supplementary elections across the country.
With his confirmation, Yakubu joins other non-career ambassadors approved by the Senate as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation abroad.+See more details
The Senate President thereafter congratulated the confirmed nominees and urged them to uphold Nigeria’s interests and project the country positively in their respective assignments.
