Several labourers are feared dead after a sand pit used for brick-making collapsed early Wednesday morning in Ridawa village, Ghari Local Government Area of Kano State.
The workers were inside the excavation site digging earth for commercial brick production when the pit suddenly caved in, trapping multiple persons beneath the debris.
Preliminary reports indicate that about 10 individuals may still be trapped underground, while others sustained injuries. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
The lawmaker representing the constituency, Sani Bala, confirmed the incident and called for urgent government intervention and technical support to aid the rescue operation.
Residents and fellow workers were the first to respond, attempting to dig out victims manually. However, the unstable soil structure has made rescue efforts difficult and dangerous.
Incidents of this nature have occurred in informal brick-making sites across parts of Kano, where labourers often work in deep, unsupported pits without proper safety measures.
No official casualty figures have been released, but the number of victims may increase as rescue operations continue.
Further updates are expected.
