A representative from the club stated: “West Ham United can confirm that striker Michail Antonio was involved in a road traffic incident today. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michail, his family, and friends during this difficult time. An update will be provided in due course.”

Antonio, hailing from Wandsworth in south London, began his senior career in non-league football with Tooting & Mitcham after his mother declined a trial opportunity at Tottenham when he was 14. He progressed through the ranks, representing clubs such as Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, and Nottingham Forest, while also spending time on loan at Cheltenham, Southampton, and Colchester.

In 2015, he signed with West Ham, quickly becoming a fan favorite among the Hammers supporters. Originally brought in as a winger, his adaptability allowed him to excel in various positions, including attacking full-back, midfielder, and ultimately centre-forward, where he made the No 9 shirt synonymous with his name.

In 2023, he played a pivotal role in securing the Europa Conference League for the club, marking their first major trophy win since 1980. At the age of 34, despite the arrival of several new players aimed at replacing him, he has continued to serve as the club’s primary striker, renowned for his commitment and ability to perform in crucial moments. He has netted 83 goals in 323 appearances for the Hammers.

Antonio is an international player for Jamaica who initially expressed a desire to represent England. He was included in squad selections by both Sam Allardyce, his former manager at West Ham, and Gareth Southgate, yet he did not make any appearances for the England team. In 2021, he obtained a Jamaican passport and subsequently participated in the 2024 Copa América.

Outside of his football career, Antonio, a divorced father of four, co-hosts the Footballer’s Football Podcast, a production by the BBC, alongside his friend Callum Wilson, a striker for Newcastle. The podcast offers listeners insights from the players’ perspective regarding their profession.
