Lagos Protest Over 15% Import Duty: Coalition Submits Demands to Gov Sanwo‑Olu and Obasa

Yoruba Council Worldwide and the Nigeria Coalition Group, has asked President Bola Tinubu to ignore those seeking extension of the implementation of the 15% import duty tax tariffs on petroleum products.

During a protest in Lagos on Tuesday, the coalition demanded immediate implementation of the import duty tax tariffs.

They also demanded a total ban and an end to importation of premium motor spirit also known as petrol and automotive gas oil, AGO, without further delay.

According to the protesters, this would help the rapid growth of the country’s economy and encourage more Nigerians to establish more indigenous companies.

The coalition said they learnt that some oil marketers in the country are lobbying for extension of the implementation of the new tariff till the end of the first quarter of 2026.

They described the move as “a dangerous venomous agenda to further continuously make Nigerians impoverished and suffer endlessly.”

The Nigeria Coalition Group and Yoruba Council Worldwide presented a joint letter of demand to the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa during the protest

They demanded that the government and those in charge of the nation’s crude oil focus on feeding the indigenous refineries before exporting the product, adding that this is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

At the protest which took place, Wednesday morning, at the entrance of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos had,
participants from various leading Coalition of Civil Society Organizations, NULAS, NANS, NAPS, Students Union bodies, OPC, Agbekoya, Arewa Youths Groups Ohanaeze Ndigbo Parliament Worldwide.

The leadership of the Nigeria Coalition Group and Yoruba Council Worldwide urged all Nigerians to continuously rally support for what they described as noble causes.
