The footage, which showed a military helicopter with a European-looking crew landing in a bushy terrain to drop off passengers, was presented by Gumi as proof of alleged Western involvement in banditry and insurgency in Nigeria.
Although Gumi did not explicitly name the countries he was referring to, many of his followers interpreted the message as a veiled accusation of Western sponsorship of violence in the country.
However, security analyst Zagazola Makama fact-checked the video and traced it not to Nigeria or the Sahel, but to Darfur, Sudan. He shared still images from a Sudanese Facebook page showing a nearly identical scene, complete with Arabic inscriptions identifying the location as Darfur.
Further analysis by independent investigators revealed that the helicopter in Gumi’s clip was a Russian Mil Mi-8, a model widely used by the Wagner Group and its successor, the Africa Corps, in various African conflict zones. While some Western nations do keep Russian helicopters for training purposes, experts stressed they are rarely deployed in Western-led combat operations.
This finding suggests the helicopter and crew were almost certainly Russian, not Western.
Far from being evidence of Western support for Nigeria’s insecurity, the video appears instead to show Russia’s ongoing role in assisting some of its African allies in conflict and counter-insurgency operations.
