The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, has continued to rise across Nigeria amid the ongoing face-off between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Dangote Refinery.

A market survey conducted by Naija News revealed that major depots such as Bovas, Rainoil, and others are now selling at above ₦1,000 per kilogram, with some outlets hitting record highs.

As of Friday, October 17, Rainoil was selling at ₦1,250 per kg, while Bovas outlets were dispensing at ₦1,500 per kg. Other depots were reported to be selling at prices as high as ₦1,700 per kg.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has directed regulatory authorities to clamp down on marketers hoarding cooking gas, amid the recent surge in prices across the country.

In a statement signed by his spokesman, Louis Ibah, on Monday, Ekpo described the actions of some marketers as exploitative and warned that the government would not allow Nigerians to be subjected to undue hardship.

Explaining the causes of the scarcity, Ekpo said, “The strike by PENGASSAN at the Dangote refinery temporarily halted LPG loading, while the maintenance work at NLNG reduced the volume of gas available in the domestic market.”

He noted that these disruptions created a supply shortfall, which triggered the sharp rise in prices.

The minister, however, assured Nigerians that supply was already improving.
