The House of Representatives has clarified reports on the discovery of the body of an unidentified individual around the National Assembly Complex on Sunday.
Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., Spokesman of the House, made this known in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
He said the clarification was based on the official report of the Nigeria Police Force, which is the lead investigative authority on the matter.
According to him, the leadership of the House considered it a duty to keep the public properly informed to avoid speculation and misinformation.
Rotimi quoted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), National Assembly Division, as saying the deceased, suspected to be a labourer at a construction site within the complex, was found at about 9 a.m. inside a red Peugeot 406 car with registration number BWR-577 BF.
He said the vehicle was parked outside the Annex Building Gate, close to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
“The body was discovered in a sleeping position on the back seat and was already in an advanced state of decomposition. The police have evacuated the remains to the mortuary and efforts are underway to establish the identity of the deceased and notify the family,” he said.
Rotimi said the National Assembly was in close contact with relevant security and emergency agencies to ensure a thorough investigation.
He commended the police for their swift response and said the House would continue to monitor developments closely.
“On behalf of the House of Representatives, we extend sympathies to the family and associates of the deceased, once identified, and assure members of the public that updates will be communicated transparently as investigations progress,” he added.
