The Madadeni Regional Court in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), has sentenced Kwazikwenkosi Aider Sibiya (37) to life imprisonment for the murder of a 22 year old woman in Madadeni in 2025.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the accused and the deceased were known to each other.
NPA spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said that on the evening of 29 January 2025, Sibiya armed himself with a knife and went to the deceased’s homestead demanding the return of his cellphone.
Sibiya alleged that the deceased and her boyfriend had stolen his cellphone when they visited him the previous day. When he arrived at the homestead, the deceased was not present, so he spoke to her mother.
The deceased’s mother advised Sibiya to report the matter to the police, but he refused. Before leaving the homestead, he threatened the mother, saying that she would soon be mourning her daughter.
Sibiya returned to the homestead the following day, again armed with a knife. Although his cellphone was returned to him, he initially refused to take it. He later accepted the phone and engaged the deceased in a conversation a short distance away from the house.
During the encounter, Sibiya suddenly attacked the deceased, fatally stabbing her with a knife and assaulting her with a bottle. The brutal incident was witnessed by members of the deceased’s family.
When family members attempted to intervene, Sibiya threatened to kill them before fleeing the scene. The matter was reported to the police, and Sibiya later handed himself over to authorities a few days later.
During the trial, State Prosecutor Marion Willis-Smith led testimony from family members who had witnessed the attack. A post mortem report detailing the injuries sustained by the deceased formed part of the state’s evidence.
Sibiya was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the sentence and said it remains committed to pursuing justice on behalf of victims of crime and their families.
