LISABI FESTIVAL: Yoruba Women Show the World What GELE Really Is — A Crown That Cannot Be Renamed

Yesterday 29 of march 2026, as Yorubaland celebrates Lisabi, the women have stepped out in their finest, and the GELE sits atop their heads like the crown it has always been.

Wrapped high, tied with precision, and worn with the unmistakable grace of Yoruba womanhood, the GELE is not just an accessory. It is a crown. It is identity. It is heritage.

And today, the true owners of the GELE have shown the world how it is done. In the streets, in the palaces, in the gathering of mothers, wives, and daughters, Yoruba women have reaffirmed what has never been in doubt: the GELE belongs to us.

It is not whatever empty, soulless word “ichafu” the ignorant have tried to attach to it, a word with no history, no ancestry, no culture, no meaning beyond the shallow attempt to mock what they cannot claim. That hollow utterance will fade, because it comes from nothing. GELE will remain, because it comes from centuries of tradition.

LISABI FESTIVAL

GELE has history. GELE has ancestors. GELE has been worn by Yoruba women for generations, in palaces, at weddings, at chieftaincy ceremonies, at festivals like this very Lisabi. It has lineage. It has dignity. It is a crown.

So today, as the GELE sits high on the heads of our mothers, wives, and daughters, the message is clear: You cannot rename what you did not create. You cannot redefine what you do not understand. You cannot reduce a crown to a slur.

GELE is ours. It belongs to Yoruba women. And no amount of foolish mockery will ever change that. Let them keep their empty words. We will keep our heritage.
