The East London Magistrate’s Court is set to deliver its judgment today in the case involving EFF leader Julius Malema and his former bodyguard, Adriaan Snyman.
The pair face multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, and reckless endangerment during the EFF’s fifth-anniversary celebrations at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane on 28 July 2018.
Both Malema and Snyman have pleaded not guilty, insisting that the object discharged was a toy gun incapable of firing live rounds. The state, however, argues that it was a real firearm, supported by testimony from 19 witnesses, including ballistics experts.
The case, which has been ongoing since 2019, has faced several delays, including one caused by the presiding magistrate’s illness late last year.
