The Yorùbás insist that a man cannot hold both realities in one palm – longevity and immunity from evil; he must embrace one and release the other.
And history, from the scrolls of scripture to the chronicles of empires, confirms that not many have defied this timeless creed…
Shall I Begin?
KING SAUL – He lived long enough to see David, his perceived rival, anointed and celebrated. His gift of longevity became his torment, for every song of David was a dagger to Saul’s pride.
KING DAVID – The man after God’s heart lived long enough to face rebellion from his own son Absalom, who shamed him in public and sought his throne. Longevity compelled him to drink the bitter cup of sorrow brewed within his own bloodline.
NAPOLEON BONAPARTE – Once the Alpha and Omega of Europe, he found himself in exile on Saint Helena, condemned to live long enough to hear of his enemies ruling the continent he once dominated. Every sunrise after Waterloo mocked him with memories of lost glory.
BASHORUN GAA – The supreme force of Oyo, the kingmaker above kings. Yet he lived long enough to see the tide turn, as the very people he once ruled with iron hands rose against him. His longevity ended not in honor but in disgrace – dragged through the streets before a shameful execution.
GENERAL OLUSEGUN OBASANJO – A man who delights in being seen as the world’s most refined democrat, yet in his second coming as civilian President, acted with the excesses of some of the most extreme dictators.
Was it not he who drove to Audu Ogbe, then PDP Chairman, demanded pounded yam, and while eating, handed Audu a resignation letter penned in his own hand – “Sign this, you know you can’t remain my chairman after criticizing me.”
He supervised impeachments with a wave of his will, hunted governors with brazen vendettas, and spared no energy branding adversaries as enemies of state.
None, perhaps, bore the brunt of his fury like Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu – men he considered the greatest threats to his dream of eternal political dominion.
But see God! Ya Allahu!! He spared General Olusegun Okikiolu Obasanjo long enough to witness what he dreaded most: the triumph of his sworn adversaries. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Àkànbí himself, against all odds, against Obasanjo’s wish, against his endorsement, against his predictions, and against his gang-ups, became President – and destiny forced Obasanjo to watch – a reluctant audience to the great spectacle. And Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, whom Obasanjo once disgraced with impeachment, rose to the pinnacle of honor as His Imperial Majesty, Olubadan of Ibadanland. Again, destiny forced Obasanjo to witness the coronation of his adversary. Qaddara Allahu

For longevity is a vintage bottle of sweet wine with a bitter aftertaste – and only the rarest few drink it dry without tasting its sorrow.
Longevity may clothe a man in agbada, but destiny decides the embroidery – Obasanjo’s robe was woven with sorrow, for he lived long enough to see his enemies enthroned in glory.
