Many Feared Dead After Gold Mine Collapse in Kasungu

Information reaching this publication indicates that at least 19 people have been confirmed dead after a mine collapsed on illegal gold miners in Gogode, located in the Mfumu Suza area of Kasungu District.

The incident occurred while individuals were digging for precious stones in what authorities suspect was an unregulated mining site.

Senior Chief Group Mankwala confirmed the tragedy and reported that eight people are still missing.
“One person has been rescued alive but is in critical condition,” said the chief, adding that search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Kasungu Police spokesperson Joseph Kachikho said police officers and medical personnel have since arrived at the scene to assist in the rescue efforts and manage the situation.

The mine collapse is believed to have been caused by unstable ground conditions, worsened by ongoing excavation activities.
