Ministry of Defence 2026 Budget: Army, Navy, Air Force Take Bulk of ₦3.15tr Defence Allocation

The Federal Government has earmarked a total of ₦3.15 trillion for the Ministry of Defence in the 2026 Appropriation Bill, with the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force accounting for the largest share of the allocation.+See more details

A detailed breakdown obtained from the Budget Office of the Federation shows that the Nigerian Army received the highest allocation of ₦1.50 trillion, largely driven by personnel costs estimated at ₦1.25 trillion.

The allocation also includes ₦81.9 billion for overheads and ₦167.77 billion for capital expenditure.

The Nigerian Navy was allocated ₦443.92 billion, comprising ₦322.91 billion for personnel, ₦49.23 billion for overheads and ₦71.78 billion for capital projects.

Similarly, the Nigerian Air Force received ₦409.15 billion, with ₦229.90 billion set aside for personnel, ₦68.58 billion for overheads and ₦110.67 billion for capital expenditure.

The headquarters of the Ministry of Defence and Defence Headquarters was allocated ₦257.01 billion, while the Training and Doctrine Command of the Nigerian Army (TRADOC) received ₦112.43 billion.

Other key defence formations and institutions also received notable allocations.

The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) was allocated ₦68.80 billion, while Defence Missions abroad got ₦83.54 billion.

The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) received ₦40.41 billion, while the Defence Space Administration was allocated ₦40.02 billion.

Training institutions such as the Command and Staff College, Jaji, and the National Defence College received ₦35.89 billion and ₦29.27 billion respectively. The Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna, was allocated ₦17.19 billion, while the Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, Lagos, received ₦13.18 billion.

Newer and specialised institutions such as the Defence Space School, Orogun, the Admiralty University of Nigeria, Ibusa, and the Defence Research and Development Bureau received allocations ranging between ₦9 billion and ₦11 billion.

The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) was allocated ₦7.65 billion, while pension-related institutions, including the Military Pension Board and the Defence Intelligence Agency Civilian Pensions Board, received a combined allocation of about ₦2.79 billion.

Overall, the defence budget comprises ₦2.39 trillion for personnel costs, ₦297.03 billion for overheads, and ₦464.47 billion for capital expenditure.

Analysts say the heavy personnel component reflects the Federal Government’s strategy to sustain troop strength and morale amid persistent security challenges across the country, while capital spending is expected to support equipment procurement, infrastructure development and military modernisation.+See more details. . .

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier stated that security remains a top priority of his administration, stressing that sustained investment in the Armed Forces is critical to restoring peace and stability nationwide.
