Approval has been granted by the Federal Government for the allocation of ₦142 billion towards the construction of new bus terminals in all six geopolitical zones of the country.
The decision, along with a directive for all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to conclude procurement processes for 2024 Appropriation contracts by September 2025, was reached during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Minister of Transportation, Sai’du Alkali, confirmed that the new bus terminals will be located in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu, Edo State (South-South).
According to the minister, this marks the first government intervention in road transport infrastructure beyond road construction. The locations were selected based on their economic viability, with the aim of improving commuter safety, reducing highway crimes, and curbing the proliferation of arms.
Alkali explained that the absence of formal bus terminals has contributed to road traffic accidents and security challenges, prompting the ministry to seek and obtain presidential approval for the initiative.
