The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared January 14, 2026, as a National Day of Action to protest the planned implementation of the Federal Government’s controversial Tax Reform Law.+See more details
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the students’ body accused the government of ignoring widespread public concerns and allegedly sidestepping constitutional procedures in pushing through the reform.
NANS said the proposed tax law, if implemented as planned, would impose additional economic burdens on Nigerians, particularly students and low-income earners, at a time when many families are already struggling with rising living costs.
“The Federal Government has failed to meaningfully engage stakeholders, including students and civil society groups, despite repeated calls for dialogue and transparency,” the association stated. “This action is a response to the continued disregard for due process and public opinion.”
The student union warned that the January 14 protest would involve peaceful demonstrations across campuses and major cities nationwide, urging all Nigerian students and concerned citizens to participate.
NANS also called on the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the Tax Reform Law and initiate broad consultations to address contentious provisions, stressing that dialogue remains the preferred path to resolving the dispute.+See more details
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government had yet to respond officially to the planned protest.
