The Minister of Defence under Niger’s transitional government, led by Abdourahamane Tiani, has accused the Republic of Benin and certain European countries of confiscating military equipment purchased by Niger from abroad.
Speaking during a press briefing, the minister claimed that the seized assets include armored vehicles, fighter jets, and other weapons meant to strengthen Niger’s defence capabilities.
He stated that these actions undermine the country’s efforts to address its security challenges, particularly in the face of insurgencies and growing instability in the region.
The government did not disclose the specific European countries allegedly involved or provide further details on the timeline of the seizures.
However, the minister expressed concern over what he described as external interference in Niger’s sovereignty and self-defence efforts.
The allegations come amid heightened tensions between Niger and its neighboring countries, following the July 2023 coup that brought Abdourahamane Tiani to power.
Niger has faced international sanctions and diplomatic isolation from several nations and regional blocs, which condemned the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum.Tap Here To Read Full Details
