On Tuesday, Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of Customs, revealed a new policy requiring mandatory drug testing for both new recruits and active officers within the Nigeria Customs Service.
Adeniyi emphasized that this initiative, integral to the current recruitment process, seeks to prevent individuals who are either unfit or reliant on substances from joining the Service.
He emphasized that the agency could no longer afford the risk of impaired decision-making among staff responsible for border security, law enforcement, and revenue collection.
He announced this during the final session of the 2025 CGC Conference in Abuja, according to a statement released by Customs spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada on Tuesday.
He said, “There will be no compromise. We are going to ensure that every new officer is tested so that we do not begin to spend Service resources rehabilitating personnel.”
