Activist Omoyele Sowore has been released from what he described as “unjust, unwarranted, and unlawful detention” by the Nigeria Police Force, following pressure from the #RevolutionNow movement and public supporters.
Announcing his release via social media, the activist claimed the Inspector-General of Police was acting illegally and had been forced to “capitulate to the demands of the revolutionary movement.”
“I have been released from unjust, unwarranted, and unlawful detention. However, it is nothing to celebrate… I can’t do without thanking you all for not giving up. You’ve all seen the power of unity,” he wrote.
While he expressed gratitude to supporters who mobilised for his freedom, he insisted that the struggle for justice and accountability continues.
The Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue an official statement on the matter as of press time.
