Despite worsening economic hardship and rising poverty across the country, the Nigerian Senate has shifted focus from addressing the plight of citizens to warning against the dangers of social media, which it described as a growing threat to national peace and governance.

Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, made the comments on Thursday during a virtual address at an event where Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, received nomination forms from the Ekiti State University Alumni Solidarity Group for BAO.

Bamidele cautioned against the misuse of online platforms and disclosed that the Senate is already considering steps to regulate social media activities in Nigeria. According to him, the space has become a breeding ground for falsehoods, aimed at discrediting political leaders and creating division among citizens.

The Senate Leader also warned that with elections around the corner in Ekiti, citizens should brace for an onslaught of fabricated stories designed to damage the governor’s image. He cited false reports about Oyebanji’s health and family life as examples of politically motivated propaganda.

“The Senate will act to reduce the growing threat of social media. If left unchecked, it will continue to undermine governance and destabilise the peace of this country,” Bamidele added.

His remarks come at a time when public frustration is mounting over Nigeria’s economic crisis, insecurity, and widespread poverty. Critics argue that rather than addressing these urgent issues, lawmakers are fixated on controlling online narratives.

The debate over social media regulation in Nigeria has remained contentious. While supporters believe it is necessary to curb fake news and political disinformation, many civil society groups and rights advocates insist that such moves could erode free speech and silence dissent in an already fragile democracy….Read..The..Full…Article..
