The Headquarters Theatre Command and 7 Division of the Nigerian Army on Saturday marked the end of the year 2024 Combined West African Social Activities (WASA) at Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.

The event, which celebrates the rich cultural heritage of soldiers and fosters unity among troops, was attended by dignitaries, including the Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, who was represented by the Head of Service, Barr. Malam Fannami.

In his address, Governor Zulum praised the military for its relentless efforts in combating terrorism and restoring peace in the state. He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for the armed forces, emphasizing the progress made in the fight against insurgency.

It is our hope that, in no time, the remnants of Boko Haram terrorism will be defeated, and we shall all witness the full restoration of peace to Borno State and the Northeast in general. The commitment and dedication of our troops have led to the decimation of hundreds of insurgents, while a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic measures has resulted in the surrender of thousands of repentant Boko Haram adherents,” he said.

He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by troops, including those who paid the supreme price in the line of duty, and called for continued support from the people of the state.

The Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force North East (Operation HADIN KAI), Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, highlighted the significance of WASA, which originated from the traditions of the African Frontier Force during World War II.

WASA provides an opportunity for troops to reconnect with their roots, celebrate cultural heritage, and foster unity among soldiers and their families,” Shaibu said.

The General Officer Commanding 7 Division and Commander, Sector 1 Northeast Operation HADIN KAI, Maj.-Gen. A.G.L. Haruna, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Zulum, and other dignitaries for their support. He commended the efforts of the organizing committee and cultural performers for making the event a success.

The event featured a variety of activities, including traditional dances by cultural groups such as the ‘Zage’ dancers, masquerade displays, bonfire lighting, and tug-of-war contests.

Dignitaries in attendance included the Deputy Theatre Commander, Maj.-Gen. K.E. Chigbu, formations and unit commanders, the Commissioner of Police, and representatives of the Shehu of Borno.
