Nigerian elections results usually written, but we are fully prepared this time — General Sani Abacha’s Chief Security Officer, Hamza Al-Mustapha

Retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to late Nigerian military ruler General Sani Abacha, has formally announced his intention to contest in the 2027 presidential election, declaring this bid as a serious and strategic effort, unlike his previous attempts.

In a recent interview with BBC Hausa, Al-Mustapha said his decision this time around is not symbolic but grounded in a determined resolve to challenge the status quo and offer a new direction for the country.

He previously contested in the 2019 and 2023 elections but failed to gain significant traction.

“This time, we are fully prepared,” he said. “Our ambition is not just to participate, but to lead with purpose and commitment.”

Al-Mustapha expressed deep concerns over Nigeria’s electoral process, alleging that previous elections were marred by widespread manipulation. According to him, results were often pre-determined rather than reflective of the will of the people.

“Election results are usually written,” he said bluntly. “That is why we have discussed with foreign countries, asking them to closely monitor Nigeria, especially regarding the elections.”

The retired major revealed that his campaign team has already initiated consultations with international stakeholders to ensure greater transparency and credibility in the 2027 polls. He emphasized that a free and fair election is critical for Nigeria’s future.

Al-Mustapha also ruled out any form of political alliance with individuals or groups whose ideologies conflict with his. When asked if he would consider supporting long-time presidential hopeful Atiku Abubakar, he dismissed the possibility outright, citing divergent political philosophies.

“I cannot align with any ideology that compromises the dignity of Nigeria or the values I stand for,” he said.

Looking ahead, Al-Mustapha said his campaign would prioritize national security, poverty alleviation, and strengthening of democratic institutions. He described these as non-negotiable pillars of his vision for the country.
